VERAS 2.0 Announcement!

Writer: Dave CichyDave Cichy

In this demonstration, I will walk you through the updated features in version 2.0. This significant release for Veras introduces new workflows, allowing us to seamlessly blend V6 and V6 Sharp for optimal results.

I'll cover the major features in this post, but for a comprehensive list of everything included in this version, please refer to this post on the forum.

Open A model in Sketchup

For this demonstration I am using the FLW Arch Oboler Eaglefeather House Project 3D Model. Note I did do a bit of texture cleanup on a few faces.

3d Mode!

3d Mode!

To enable 3D mode, just click on the 3D side of the Mode Switch.

Export

The authoring application you are using will export your current 3D view into Veras. A small popup should appear, showing the export status.

How do I navigate?

If you're familiar with SketchUp, you'll feel comfortable here. The camera controls are quite similar.

Orbit Mode

Orbit Mode

Pressing the middle mouse wheel activates Orbit mode. The view will rotate around the point where your cursor is currently positioned.

Pan Mode

Pan Mode

Holding down the Shift key on your keyboard allows the middle mouse wheel to Pan instead.

Zoom

Zoom

Scrolling your mouse wheel forward zooms in, while scrolling it backward zooms out. Keep in mind that the cursor's position will determine the zoom target.

Resync Camera

To sync your 3D View with the authoring application, simply click the Resync Camera button. For automatic syncing, select the pulldown menu and switch to Live Sync Camera.

Render Selection by Material

Render Selection by Material

A standout feature of the 3D viewer is the Material Render Selection. With one click, you can target all objects that use a specific material. To do this, go to the Edit tab, click the Render Selection dropdown, and Select by Material. Left-clicking on a surface will add it to the selection, while clicking on a different surface will switch the selection to that material. Holding Shift will add the next material to your current selection.

Shift Add to selection

With only a few clicks and an updated prompt, you can replace parts of the rendering with alternative options.

Best of Both Worlds

Best of Both Worlds

V6 Sharp excels at Geometry Retention, occasionally to a fault. In this demonstration, I illustrate how the surface pattern of the SketchUp material remains prominent across all options with V6 Sharp. Nevertheless, by swiftly editing with Select by Material, V6 can produce excellent results that appear more natural.

Enhanced Render Selection

Several updates have been made to the render selection tool. I believe these improvements will simplify the editing process for you.

Perfect Edges

Perfect Edges

When creating a custom selection, you can now click slightly outside the canvas. This ensures a precise selection of the canvas edge.

Recall recent selections

Recall recent selections

All selections from your current session are now saved in the dropdown menu below the Render Selection button. Just click the small arrow to display them.

Add as many as you like

You can now add as many selections as you wish before submitting them. Once you've completed your selection, you can choose any region by clicking on it. To remove a region, simply select it and click the Trash can icon or press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Invert

Invert

Selections can be inverted by clicking the Invert Mask button

save Favorites and reorder

save Favorites and reorder

You can easily arrange your renderings by clicking and dragging them to reorder within the stack. The new Favorites feature helps you stay organized; simply click the Star in the corner to mark as Favorite. To quickly filter only your favorites, click the Star at the top of the stack.

Reorder presets

Additionally, you can rearrange your Presets on the Explore tab.

Conclusion

With the 3D viewer and all the enhancements to Render selection, you now have more control than ever before. We hope this quick demonstration inspires you to incorporate these new features into your own workflow.
